What kind of slot this is

In short, it is a game about Zeus, who stands to the right of the grid and every so often hurls multiplier orbs onto the reels. The grid is large, six columns of five symbols, and it has no paylines at all. The slot does not care where the symbols sit: if eight matching crowns, rings or gems are on screen, the win counts even when they are scattered across opposite corners. That makes the game look chaotic for the first few minutes, but you get used to it quickly because there is nothing to work out.

The second thing worth knowing from the start is that the slot is very uneven. Most spins end with nothing or return less than the bet, and that can go on for a long time. Everything interesting happens in the rare moments when a winning combination lines up with a multiplier, or better still with several. People love the game for that, and for the same reason it is risky for anyone who sits down to play without a limit.

The numbers

Two caveats about the table. An RTP of 96.50% is the default setting, but the provider also supplies the slot with lower values, and the operator decides which version to run. You can only find out inside the game itself: open the rules with the “i” button and scroll to the end, where the percentage is stated. The bonus buy is a similar story, and some operators simply do not have the button.

How an ordinary spin plays out

Say your bet is 2,000 soums. You press the button, the grid fills with thirty symbols and the game counts the matching ones. Nine crowns have landed: 8–9 crowns pay 10 bets, which is 20,000 soums. The crowns vanish, the symbols above them drop down, new ones fall in from the top and the count runs again. If the grid now holds, say, eight blue gems, another quarter of a bet is added to the win. This carries on until no new combinations form, and only then is the spin over.

In practice long chains do not happen often. Far more commonly the tumble stops after the first step and the win is smaller than the bet, because the cheap gems pay from 0.25×. The full table for every symbol is on the rules page.

The multipliers everything depends on

A multiplier orb can land on any spin, including in the base game. It carries a number from 2× to 500×, and small values turn up vastly more often than large ones. The orb stays on the grid until the tumbles finish, then all the orbs that landed are added together and multiply the win for the spin. Had orbs of 3× and 8× been on the grid in the example above, the amount would have been multiplied by 11. The frustrating part is that an orb is worth nothing without a winning combination: it can land showing 100×, and if the grid is empty the spin is still lost.

Free spins

Four Zeus symbols anywhere on the grid trigger 15 free spins. The rules stay the same with one change: multipliers stop resetting. Every orb that lands on a winning spin is added to a running total, and that total applies until the round ends. If it has reached 30× by the tenth spin, the next win with a 5× orb is multiplied by 35.

Gates of Olympus 1000 and Super Scatter: how the versions differ

After the original took off, Pragmatic Play released two more Gates of Olympus slots with Zeus. Both look almost identical and use the same 6×5 grid, but each has its own maths.
